The issue of regional languages is a highly sensitive one in France, and opposing views clash, sometimes quite fiercely! Indeed, partisan claims, absurd beliefs and vague explanations are circulating on all sides…

The aim of this conference is to correct misinformation and shed light on the debate in a serious and constructive manner, drawing on scientific knowledge about languages, their use, their history, their value and their usefulness.

The conference will address questions such as:
- Are some languages superior and others inferior?
- Do regional languages have their own grammar and literature?
- In what ways are they interesting and useful?
- Why are some politicians so strongly opposed to regional languages?
- What is the difference between a common language and a single language?
