The V6
Canal de Nantes à Brest, Crozon Peninsula
Fans of nature won’t want to miss this bucolic route, which starts off following the Nantes-Brest canal, then in its second section crosses the Crozon Peninsula along the old railroad line. This 93 km-long V6 route is currently being improved for an even better experience.
A rural adventure between land and sea
From Carhaix, the starting point of the V6 in Finistère, you’ll head south towards Port-de-Carhaix to join the Nantes-Brest Canal. Between the Montagnes Noires and Arrée Mountains, the village of Poher lies at the crossroads of paths, roads and waterways, then the towpath and its various locks will lead you to Châteauneuf-du-Faou, the destination of your first stopover. The French painter Paul Sérusier once lived here. In the distance, you’ll see the fairytale shape of Château de Trévarez, a 20th-century heritage site that you can access thanks to a signposted connecting route. Near Pleyben, you can make a detour to visit its incredibly flamboyant church and churchyard before continuing to Châteaulin, the final stop of your journey along the Canal greenway.
The V6 is currently undergoing improvement works but for the time being, you can pick it up again further on, at the entrance to the Crozon Peninsula. A quiet and practical route, it will enable you to reach Crozon with complete peace of mind, and then head to the small heritage port of Camaret-sur-Mer, home to the Tour Vauban, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of a series of coastal fortifications in the area. For over 300 years, it has watched over the Camaret cove and the entrance to the narrow waters around Brest.
