Paths and trails
More intimate landscapes
Take a trip along the country lanes and footpaths that wind their way inland through the Cap Sizun. This is an authentic part of France dotted with a rich heritage of architecture – both the sacred and that of everyday life – offering discoveries at every turn. Exploring inland, you’re rewarded by a captivating atmosphere, where the tranquillity of the surroundings and the beauty of the panoramas feel like a complete escape. The wild, unspoilt character of these landscapes at the furthest end of west Brittany are reminiscent of other nearby areas such as the Crozon Peninsula and Pays Bigouden. With lonesome chapels, dry-stone walls and villages where you’ll feel you’ve stepped back in time, each path tells its own story, creating a living landscape of unique charm.
The Pointe du Raz on foot
Decades ago, customs officers used to patrol the Cap Sizun coastline on the lookout for smugglers, and you can follow in their footsteps on the GR®34 coastal path. As you walk, you’ll discover breathtaking cliffs, peaks, and spurs suspended over the sea, as well as more intimate sites such as sandy coves and sheltered fishing harbours.
Fancy a tour of Cap Sizun? Follow the GR® de Pays du Cap Sizun: starting from Audierne, this loop covers a total of 122 km, giving you 6 days’ walking at the very edge of the world! Nature is on a grand scale here, so you’re in for a real treat. Beyond the coastal trails, lose yourself among the rural paths of the Cap Sizun, for a walking adventure between land and sea. With over 500 signposted trails, Finistère is an absolute paradise for hikers, cyclists and horse riders alike.
On the water
A whole host of activities
The Pointe du Raz can also be explored from the sea, and anyone who loves outdoor sports and leisure activities will find plenty to do here: kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, dinghy sailing, rowing, surfing and even diving at the Pointe de Brézellec.
Each activity allows you to experience the coast in a different way, getting up close to its magnificent landscapes and biodiversity. Don’t miss the charm of a boat trip to the Île de Sein: you’ll be glad of the large boat as you go through the swells of the Iroise Sea and the Raz de Sein, enjoying the view and letting your eyes wander along the steep coastline. It’s also a unique opportunity to get up close to La Vieille lighthouse and imagine yourself as a lighthouse keeper…
The line-anglers of the Raz de Sein
Line-anglers are fishermen who have mastered a particularly acrobatic type of fishing in the heart of the Raz de Sein, waters that are renowned for strong currents. These experienced anglers, equipped with small boats, specialise in line-caught sea bass, defying the waves under extremely difficult sailing conditions. Their technique, handed down from generation to generation, requires great skill and precise know-how. Every catch is an achievement, proof of their passion and expertise. This traditional form of fishing, which is both daring and respectful of the environment, has made the Sein line-anglers iconic figures of the Iroise Sea, recognisable by their small boats sailing along the waves.
Through culture
A world of possibilities
The Pointe du Raz and the Cap Sizun offer an infinite experience of discovery, from natural and architectural heritage including remnants of World War Two to a whole range of cultural events. Each village or hamlet, each building and each event tells a story that reflects the spirit of the place.
The ports are also must-see sites, whether you prefer the tiny sheltered harbours along the coastline or the lively little port of Audierne, recognised as a Port of Heritage Interest – each port is a living reminder of maritime activity both now and in days gone by. Take time to visit any quayside and you’ll be rewarded with chance encounters, crafts, know-how and local treats for the tastebuds.
