ALGAE: a centre dedicated to understanding and promoting seaweed

Scheduled to open in July 2026

The ALGAE Centre has been conceived as a vibrant space, open to the world and shaped by the region’s tides. Here, maritime heritage, science, knowledge-sharing and a warm, welcoming atmosphere come together to offer an experience that is both enriching and evocative.
Far more than just an exhibition space, the centre is organised into several complementary themes, designed to welcome everyone throughout the year: passing visitors, local residents, schoolchildren, researchers, professionals and anyone simply curious about the marine world.
Throughout the visit, everyone is invited to explore a common theme: seaweed, the seaweed-harvesting heritage and the skills that shape the coastal identity. Each space offers a different gateway to see, understand, feel and experience.

The exhibition hall: an immersive journey into the world of seaweed
The heart of the ALGAE Centre, the exhibition hall takes visitors on a journey to the heart of the coast and its riches.
From the very first steps, the atmosphere, images and sounds immerse visitors in the world of seaweed. Artefacts, stories, personal accounts and interactive displays work together to reveal the full richness of this living heritage.
As you make your way through the exhibition, you’ll explore the diversity of seaweed that thrives along our coasts, discover the daily lives of seaweed harvesters and traditional uses, and then observe how practices and trades have evolved. Finally, the focus turns to the future, examining the major challenges and opportunities associated with this natural resource.
Designed as an experience that is both sensory and accessible, this space can be experienced on several levels: here, you learn, you feel, you marvel… each at their own pace.

Each area will offer a different approach, whilst following a common thread: seaweed, the heritage of seaweed harvesting and maritime expertise. Visitors will thus be able to discover:
- a permanent exhibition dedicated to seaweed, its history and its many uses;
- an educational area dedicated to schools and families;
- a conference and screening room;
- a resource centre for researchers, students and professionals;
- a welcoming shop showcasing local products and expertise.

This unique venue in Brittany aims to raise awareness of this natural wealth and to highlight seaweed as a resource for the future.
