Historical sites and monuments
Art and history, Fine arts, Town
An emblematic figure of post-impressionism and founder of the Nabis group, Paul Sérusier (1864-1927) settled in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, attracted by the landscapes of the Pontadig valley, the banks of the Aulne and the Montagnes Noires. In 1906, he had his house built there. His wife, the artist Marguerite Gabriel-Claude (1879-1950), joined him in 1912. Together, they drew inspiration from the beauty of the area.
The museum
The town of Châteauneuf-du-Faou has an exceptional heritage linked to the two artists. Their home and the places that inspired them still exist. The church of Saint-Julien houses the only decoration by Paul Sérusier still in place and accessible to the public: the baptistery murals (1914-1919).
The museum's collection of over 200 works highlights the work of this pair of artists and their deep connection with Châteauneuf-du-Faou. It bears witness to their influence on modern art and their place in the history of art.
