From Tibet to the delta, the Mekong flows for 4,350 km, crossing six countries. From China to Laos, from Cambodia to Vietnam, the film traces twenty years of change in the towns and people living along its banks: Tibetan salt flats, Xishuangbanna, Luang Prabang, Angkor, Phnom Penh, dragon boat races, the house of Marguerite Duras’s lover, Ho Chi Minh at Christmas… Amidst unchanging traditions, modernisation and the legacy of explorers such as Mouhot, Pavie, Garnier and Doudart de Lagrée, this is a journey along a legendary river, bearing witness to the upheavals of a rapidly changing world.
