At a family dinner to which his friends the Landernau family are also invited, Pacarel announces that he wants to produce an opera composed by his daughter. He wants to sign a contract with a famous tenor from Bordeaux. The first misunderstanding occurs when
the arrival of a young man from Bordeaux, the son of his friend Dufausset, who had come to study law in Paris. Pacarel mistook him for the expected tenor and got the young man to sign a contract... who then fell in love with Pacarel's wife, mistaking her for Dr. Landernau's wife...
