Conférence au Musée Sérusier: Les estampes japonaises
Conférence, Exhibition, Painting
Conference at the Musée Sérusier: Japanese prints on 26 September at 6.00 pm
> ON RESERVATION
Géraldine Guérin, art historian and lecturer at Aix Marseille University, will be giving a talk on Japanese prints.
In the 19th century, Western artists discovered the art of printmaking, which was to have a major influence on them. It was a subtle art in which, with delicacy and speed, the painter captures life, spontaneous gestures and fleeting moments.
These colourful prints reveal the Japanese world, then closed to the West. In 1855, the Meiji era began, and the Empire of the Rising Sun opened up to Western trade and culture. Among these prints, the ukio-e type, born of popular art, is one of Kapon's cultural references.
After understanding the engraving technique used to produce these prints, the guide will take you on a journey through this 'floating' world, as the term 'ukiyo' would be translated in French.
