André Manoukian – La Sultane

For the past five albums, the artist has drawn inspiration from Armenian music as an inexhaustible source, whose hues blend perfectly with modal jazz. Her piano becomes her innermost memory, her cultural heritage, a language of tenderness. Straddling East and West, her compositions are underpinned by the spectacular phrasing of Mosin Kawa’s Indian tablas, Gilles Coquard’s powerful double bass, Anissa Nehar’s cajón, the sumptuous violins of the Appassionato Orchestra conducted by Mathieu Herzog, arranged by himself and Simon Cochard.

A boundless horizon, Levantine arabesques like so many initiatory paths, labyrinths that seem to follow the twists and turns of our memories. Finally, the voice of Arpi Alto, the Armenian diva, treats us to two poignant lullabies.
