La photographie de sport, tout un art !

Discover an exceptional exhibition dedicated to sports photography, featuring over 80 works, 38 photographers and 17 sporting disciplines.
To mark the bicentenary of photography, Le Comœdia is celebrating a photographic genre still too often regarded as merely a record of sporting achievements, revealing the full aesthetic, emotional and artistic richness of these images.

From motor racing to tennis, from rugby to boxing, from sailing to surfing, from cycling to athletics, the photographs on display offer a different perspective on sport. They capture the decisive moment, the emotion, the movement, but also the bodies, the light, the colours and the compositions that transform a sporting scene into a true work of art.

Sports photography is not limited to immortalising a performance. It can become historic, spectacular, pictorial, emotional or social. The photographer’s eye plays an essential role: choosing a viewpoint, composing an image and sometimes waiting for that fraction of a second when gesture, expression and light come together perfectly.

The exhibition offers visitors the chance to discover images that have become iconic, such as Neil Leifer’s ‘Ali – Williams Overhead’, taken in 1966 during the fight between Muhammad Ali and Cleveland Williams. Thanks to a spectacular viewpoint and an almost abstract composition, this photograph transcends mere photojournalism and stands out as a major work in the history of sports photography.

Another highlight of the exhibition is Stéphane Meunier’s *Les Yeux dans les Bleus*. His previously unpublished photographs, taken in 1998 within the French national football team, reveal – far removed from the official images – the behind-the-scenes moments, the waiting periods and the camaraderie among the players before they were crowned world champions.
