"In 1950s France, before the era of independence, my mother – a blonde with blue eyes – fell in love with a handsome Senegalese man. He disappeared before I was born. All that remains of him is the colour of my skin and the hostile or friendly reactions it has provoked. It was within this social context that my perspective took shape and my imagination was nourished.

“What Remains of Our Mothers’ Loves” is an exploration of this ‘African-ness’ which forms the foundation of my identity—one that defies all labels. A territory without borders, evoked by images of Brittany, the sea and boats entering the harbour. A territory where the jazz of Jacques Schwarz-Bart mingles with the sounds of the city, the breath of the wind and the lapping of the waves.” (Cathy Dubois)
