19/10 – Ecuador – A Land of Diversity – 2.30 pm
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean, spanned by the Andes and crossed by the equator, Ecuador is an exceptional country boasting one of the world’s greatest levels of biodiversity. This natural diversity is interwoven with a rich cultural mosaic, comprising the descendants of Spanish and Amerindian ancestors, as well as 13 indigenous peoples. The identity of each of these groups is intimately linked to its territory. On the slopes of dormant volcanoes, in the heart of tropical forests, in coastal villages and on the streets of Quito, this film will take you on a journey through teeming natural beauty. It will also introduce you to a people determined to protect their traditions
12/11 – Philippines – Between Dream and Reality – 2.30 pm
With its sumptuous landscapes, terraced rice fields, idyllic beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, this country has become a highly sought-after destination for tourists from all over the world. Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, however, it is often beset by spectacular volcanic eruptions and powerful typhoons. Facing the violence of this unpredictable natural world with humility, I met a smiling people, imbued with gentleness, endowed with a great sense of hospitality, a profound Catholic faith, and who place their trust entirely in the strength of family and children. I shall take you from island to island to meet mysterious healers, headhunters, sumptuous festivals and exceptional underwater worlds.
7/12 – Route 66 – The Trail of the American Dream – 2.30 pm
From Chicago to Los Angeles, it winds like a scar across the desert landscape, between canyons and endless plains. Artists tell its story; archive films bring its early days back to life. Chronicled by Kerouac and Steinbeck, it is the road of the American Dream, channelling the energies of a people towards the conquest of the West. Harley-Davidson and Cadillacs, ghost towns, rock and country music – Route 66 carries our dreams and our nostalgia for an idealised America…
11/01 – The Pyrenees – 2.30 pm
A true natural barrier separating France and Spain, between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees offer breathtaking panoramas. Peaks over 3,000 metres high, emerald lakes, villages lost in the mountains, pastoral traditions, a sanctuary for wildlife where vultures reign supreme in the Pyrenean skies, and the bear, which continues to be a subject of debate… To understand the Pyrenees is to trek the GR 10, this long-distance walking route, to try to make sense of the high mountains, and to explore the mountain passes made famous by the Tour de France… It also means listening to the locals, who will lead us into their valleys, and discovering this region shaped by its geography and climate, its traditions and human activities.
23/01 – Antarctica – 4.00 pm
Antarctica, a continent so distant, so extreme, and yet the setting for some of humanity’s greatest adventures. The first explorers recounted their extraordinary expeditions, which only the imagination can truly picture. All were driven by a quest for achievement and the discovery of the unknown. It is this same magnetic pull that scientists and tourists feel today, whether on a cruise or during a wintering season. Through their experiences, we can catch a glimpse of the indescribable: life on a vast, frozen continent where extremes coexist. This inhospitable land pushes humanity beyond its physical and psychological limits, whilst offering a daily sense of wonder. It also holds the promise of new scientific discoveries, which will enable us to better understand this pristine and fragile land… so that we may better protect it.
22/02 – Ethiopia – 2.30 pm
On the night of 6–7 January, Christian Ethiopia is abuzz with excitement for ‘Genna’, Christmas.
In the weeks leading up to it, pilgrims set out from the four corners of the country towards Lalibela, the Ethiopian Jerusalem, where the celebrations are at their most spectacular.
To bear privileged witness to this faith, Frédéric and Olivier will walk for 23 days through breathtaking landscapes, far from civilisation, moved by the spirituality all around them. Through their vibrant testimony to humanity, they take us to a different Ethiopia: mountainous, Christian, welcoming. Very welcoming indeed! A powerful rebuke to prejudice, an ode to the beauty of a proud people…
