Concert de Noël – Ensemble Matheus
Christmas / New Year / Christmas markets, Concert
A Christmas programme centred on Bach:
• Cantatas BWV 61 and 62 – *Nun komm der Heiden Heiland*
• Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068
This programme showcases profoundly spiritual music, conceived as a collective experience, where fervour and joy are expressed both in the solemnity of the chorale and in the orchestral momentum.
The cantatas, written for the Advent season, give voice to a shared sense of anticipation. Through the Lutheran chorale, Bach embeds the music within a shared, accessible and unifying gesture, where the text, the singing and the musical structure combine to create a moment of togetherness. The spiritual dimension is never abstract here: it is embodied in rhythmic energy, clarity of composition and a direct connection to the collective.
The Orchestral Suite No. 3 extends this dynamic through festive, luminous and jubilant music. Through its grandeur, its dance-like quality and its vitality, it opens up the soundscape and offers an orchestral counterpoint to the intimacy of the cantatas, affirming joy as an essential aspect of the Christmas season.
