Concert by the clarinet and string quintet

The Orchestre National de Bretagne's new all-female quintet offers a musical journey for clarinet and strings from the end of Classicism to the height of Romanticism.

Mozart's Quintet for clarinet and strings in A major, K.581, is a veritable declaration of the composer's love for the clarinet, whose warm, expressive tonalities allow us to glimpse the full solo potential of this instrument, still relatively young for its time. With his Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B minor, Op.115, Brahms follows in Mozart's footsteps, following in the tradition while remaining true to himself. Bittersweet harmonic colours, subtle counterpoint, Romantic vehemence and restraint... Brahms explores a wide range of emotions here.

The centrepiece of this programme and a link between styles, Emilie Mayer is a major composer of the Romantic era. A free woman who chose to live alone with and for music in an era that was hardly conducive to it, she developed a powerful body of work, a little gem of expressiveness and mastery of melodic language. For this programme, the ONB commissioned composer Pierre Chépélov to arrange her piece Notturno for violin and piano, Op.48, thus also placing it in the quintet tradition.

The Orchestre National de Bretagne is funded by the Région Bretagne, the Ministère de la Culture - DRAC Bretagne, the Ville de Rennes, the Conseil Départemental d'Ille-et-Vilaine, with the support of the Conseil Départemental du Morbihan and Rennes Métropole.
