In this remote overseas region, we embark on a journey through history, culture and tourism. Yohann Brichet takes us there on foot, by plane, in a 4x4 or by canoe.
Through his eyes, we’ll discover the homes of the Amerindians, Hmong, Creoles, legionnaires, Bushinengues, descendants of convicts or engineers at the space centre, garimpeiros in a gold mine, and teachers from mainland France.
But it is also a genuine journey through time to be experienced: the first indigenous peoples, colonisation, slavery, the gold rush, the establishment of the penal colony and the European space base… are all elements that have shaped the history of this region.
The backdrop to this expedition is the vast equatorial rainforest, with its unique ecosystem, as well as the many rivers and streams that criss-cross it.
So many encounters, so many different facets and adventures to experience.
For French Guiana is a land of contrasts: many communities retain their traditional way of life, whilst living in this little piece of Europe lost in the Amazon, and indeed one of the richest regions in South America.
This journey is an authentic expedition, a voyage to the heart of a preserved territory that is unique in the world.
