The macabre culture developed in Brittany at the end of the Middle Ages in a context marked by the return of the plague (1348), which killed between a third and a half of the population and recurred every 10/12 years; by the war that affected Brittany at the same time; and by a renewal of the Church's message, which placed increasing emphasis on the afterlife, particularly hell. This long-established tradition can be traced back to the mid-twentieth century. This illustrated talk will provide an opportunity to look at this long-term theme.
