Between spelling mistakes, flowery language and perfectly unapologetic bad faith, excuse notes are rarely literary masterpieces… but they’re often real gems of unintentional humour. Late arrivals, absences, punishments, disastrous school reports or made-up minor ailments: parents compete to come up with the most imaginative excuses to justify, defend or get their child out of trouble – even if it means verging on the absurd.

Authentic, delightful, sometimes poetic, often surprising – and always true – these messages become the starting point for an unexpected moment of sharing, punctuated by confidences, light-hearted score-settling and moving revelations.
