Enclos paroissial de Tréflévénez

Among the parish churchyards in the area, the one at Tréflévénez stands out and is surprising when compared with the splendour and opulence of its neighbours in the Léon region.
And yet, this country church harbours treasures that are not immediately apparent and which cannot be found anywhere else.

Upon entering the enclosure, there is no monumental gateway, but a simple wayside cross (1901); no complete ossuary (1611), but just its façade, narrowly saved and incorporated into a residential house. Even the Church of Saint-Pierre, built at the end of the 15th century in the late Gothic style (and altered many times over the centuries), is modest in appearance from the outside.

The full majesty of this unusual place becomes apparent the moment you step inside the church. The delicate colours, blending blue and white with touches of gold, evoke a sense of serenity. The apparent simplicity serves as a setting for true treasures.
The 16th-century corbels depict some of the most astonishing popular scenes and parables. On the wall, a painting of the Crucifixion (1696) was uncovered when the Rosary altarpiece was removed.

Nearby, the tomb dating from 1677 bears witness to Hamon Huon de Kerezellec’s love for his late son.

Finally, worth noting is the Way of the Cross created in 2005 by the Romanian artist Valentin Scarlatescu, which alone is worth a visit, as are the painted panelling decorations on the vaulted ceiling.
