The Washerwomen of the night

Ghosts, witches, warrior goddesses or creatures from the beyond... The legend of the washerwomen of the night, ghostly and mysterious figures, has crossed Europe since the early Middle Ages. From one local tradition to another, they beat their linen to announce death or share their fate with unfortunate passers-by; woe betide the unconscious person who disturbs them or the housewife who accepts their help!

In Brittany, they are best known thanks to Anatole Le Braz's La Légende de la Mort, a monumental ethnographic investigation into the subject of death, in which they join key figures such as the Ankoù and a whole corpus of customs and testimonies.

Marthe Vassallo and Gildas Pungier, accompanied by a vocal quartet from the Mélisme(s) chamber choir and a diatonic accordion, set these spellbinding stories to music and text.

Les Lavandières de la nuit" is a storytelling concert that conjures up tunes from the world of the strange and the secrets of the laundries: from so-called traditional music, from French and European composers, with songs from another time or contemporary creations... An unsettling and delightful plunge into the darkness where doors between worlds open.
