Exposition “Les églises Beaumanoir – une épopée architecturale en Trégor”
Exhibition
At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the western part of the bishopric of Tréguier and the eastern fringe of the bishopric of Léon were covered in a mantle of churches and chapels with singular and innovative architectural features that tradition attributes to the Beaumanoir workshop in Morlaix.
On either side of the town of Morlaix, from Guimiliau to Ploulec'h and from Plougonver to Henvic, in the heart of a prosperous region, stonemasons, carpenters, sculptors and master glassmakers worked tirelessly on a multitude of projects sponsored by generous patrons. They contribute to the creation of a part of Brittany's built heritage, the inestimable value of which was highlighted by the fire at Notre-Dame de la Merci church in Trémel in June 2016.
The church of Saint Ténénan in Guerlesquin dates back to the end of the 15th century and was designed by the Beaumanoir workshop. Rebuilt in the mid-19th century, it has preserved its western facade, which is listed in the Inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques (Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments) and bears witness to this architectural gem, as well as the workshop's distinctive architecture: bell tower-wall and chevet with multiple valleys.
The result of a unique collaboration between the Pays d'art et d'histoire du Trégor, the Pays d'art et d'histoire du Pays de Morlaix and Morlaix Communauté, this travelling exhibition of 15 educational panels explores the forces and contours of an architectural epic that distinguishes the history and religious heritage of the Trégor region.
