The Russian author’s first play explores the wear and tear on a man unable to live up to the expectations of those around him. His wife Anna, who is seriously ill, remains faithfully devoted to him, whilst he struggles with a weariness he no longer understands. Around them, a small community observes, judges and talks at length, convinced it understands what is actually eluding it. A great admirer of Chekhov, Jean-François Sivadier reveals here the play’s nervous tension and undiminished modernity, with a cast of remarkable performers, including Nicolas Bouchaud as a fragile and poignant Ivanov.
