‘Love between deaf people does not exist; it is a figment of the hearing world’s imagination. There is sex, there is intimacy, but not that need. It is similarity that comes before everything else.’

Inspired by this surprising quote from the novel by Claudia Durastanti, who was born to deaf parents, Le Théâtre des Silences set out to explore the nature of love within the deaf community. Is love different for ‘deaf’ people and ‘hearing’ people, and why? The script for the show was inspired by meetings with 48 deaf volunteers across four towns in France, where their personal stories were gathered. AMOUR SOURD explores the unique nature of romantic experiences, whilst questioning the universal nature of desire and intimacy.
