GR® de Pays d’Iroise
Head off to the edge of the world
Grab your trainers and set off on a 6-day adventure to the edge of the world! Walk along the coastal path with amazing views over the Iroise Natural Marine Park, its islands and the wild movements of the ocean. It’s a wonderful way to discover the unspoilt and ever-changing landscapes of the Iroise Sea, photogenic, impressive and unforgettable.
A remarkable lookout filled with emotion facing the ocean
Your adventure on the GR® de Pays d’Iroise begins in Saint-Renan, a medieval village in the heart of the Iroise region. It is home to the largest market in Finistère, where you can stock up and satisfy your taste buds before heading for the Iroise coast.
You are now facing the many shades of blue of the Iroise Natural Marine Park. Once you reach the Pointe de Corsen, the most westerly point in Finistère, you’ll be treated to a panoramic view of the ocean and the islands of the Iroise Sea, including Ouessant and the Molène archipelago, which are visible in the distance. Once you’ve passed the Pointe de Kermorvan and its astonishing square lighthouse, you’ll be in Le Conquet, a charming little town that has been recognised as a little town of great charm. Next stop, the Pointe de Saint-Mathieu, whose lighthouse has an incredible 163 steps! You’re now skirting the southern coast of the Iroise Sea, with the Crozon Peninsula in front of you. As you walk, you’ll notice several fortresses, including Bertheaume, Toulbro’ch and Minou with its pretty lighthouse, all of which remind you of the strategic importance of the nearby city of Brest, and how this coast had to be defended over the years. From Sainte-Anne beach, return to Saint-Renan.
The many facets of Pointe de Saint-Mathieu
Facing the Iroise Natural Marine Park, you’ll be captivated by this exceptional panoramic seascape looking over the archipelagos of Molène and Ouessant. Climb steps of the lighthouse and you’ll be rewarded with a 360° view. Immerse yourself in the history of Finistère by visiting the ruins of the Abbey Saint-Mathieu de Fine Terre. Enter the cenotaph in honour of the sailors who died for France, a unique place filled with emotion in every room and walk just a little further from the Pointe de Saint-Mathieu to the bunker of the Musée Mémoires 39/45, where you can step back in time to World War Two.
